Refrigerator Repair
Freezer rock solid but the fridge side is warm? That is usually a failed defrost heater or a stuck damper, and it is a same-day fix. Compressor jobs are the expensive ones at $700 to $1,250, and on an older unit we will tell you to walk away. Fridges are the one appliance you cannot wait on, so these calls go to the front of the queue.
Washer Repair
Water on the laundry room floor means a pump, a hose or a door seal, and every hour it sits is more damage to your subfloor. Front loaders in the older homes around Heritage Hill take a beating from hard water. Most washer repairs land between $100 and $400.
Dryer Repair
Two cycles to dry one load is not a quirk. It is restricted airflow, and it is how dryer fires start. Fire crews answer roughly 2,900 of them a year and lint is the leading cause. Most dryer faults are cheap, $100 to $300, which makes this the easiest call you will make all week.
Dishwasher Repair
Cloudy glasses, standing water, a door that will not latch. Michigan water is hard enough to scale up a spray arm within a few years. Repairs run $100 to $350. Past about ten years, a control board failure usually tips the maths toward replacing.
Oven & Range Repair
An oven running 40 degrees cold ruins every dinner until it is fixed. Igniters and elements are cheap and quick. Control boards are neither. Ranges last around 14 years, longer than anything else in your kitchen, so fixing one is normally the right call.
Microwave Repair
Built-in and over-range units are worth fixing because replacing one means matching a cabinet cutout. A countertop microwave usually is not. We will tell you before you pay anyone a call-out fee.

Eastown: warm fridge, cold freezer
A 2016 Whirlpool side-by-side. Freezer fine, fridge climbing past 50 degrees. The owner had a quote for $900 to replace the compressor. The compressor was fine. It was a $180 defrost heater and a clogged drain line, and the ice sheet on the evaporator told the whole story in four seconds.
Fixed in 70 minutes. $180 instead of $900.
Alger Heights: dryer running twice
Every load needed two cycles. The vent run went 22 feet through a 1950s crawl space and had never been cleaned. We pulled out most of a bin bag of lint. This is the exact setup that produces the 2,900 dryer fires US crews attend every year.
Cleared and tested. One cycle, and a fire risk gone.
Heritage Hill: the job we turned down
A 14-year-old dishwasher with a dead control board. The part alone was $310, fitted about $420. A comparable new machine was $650. That is 65 percent of replacement on a machine four years past its average life. We charged her nothing and told her to buy a new one.
We left with $0. She has sent us four neighbours.

The Victorians in Heritage Hill make up one of the largest historic districts in Michigan. Beautiful homes, and behind them some of the longest and most awkward dryer vent runs we see anywhere in the city. Long run, more bends, more lint, more risk.
Alger Heights is about 77 percent owner-occupied, so we see appliances that have been kept for fifteen years and are worth keeping longer. Eastown skews younger and rented, which means landlord-grade machines run hard by tenants who never got the manual.
The one thing they share is water. West Michigan groundwater is hard, and hard water scales up dishwasher spray arms and washer valves years before the machine should be failing. If your dishes come out cloudy in Grand Rapids, that is not your detergent.

Yes. Any technician who opens a refrigerant circuit on your fridge or freezer must hold EPA Section 608 certification under federal law. Ours do. We are also insured. Ask any company you call for their 608 credential. If they cannot produce it, they should not be touching your sealed system.
